Example: Limits of the pericope for 2 Corinthians 4:7-15
4:1-6 focused on the glory of the gospel (see "Context"),
and 4:7 indicates a new
stage in the discussion by focusing on the "clay jars" which are such
a contrast to
the glory. Therefore, v. 7 is an appropriate place to begin (and the de&
should
be translated as "but").
v. 16 recalls 4:1 ("we do not lose heart"), indicating that Paul has finished this section of the discussion and is now looking back to pick up that earlier theme. Furthermore, the "you" language disappears at vs. 16 at least for a while Therefore 4:7-15 is an appropriate unit to consider. This decision may be reinforced if "God’s power" (vs 7) and "God’s glory" (vs. 15) are seen as an inclusio, bracketing this text. This bracket should be shown on the outline.
Notice that the lectionary never gives us the text in this form; 4:5-12 is assigned for Proper 4B, and 4:13-5:1 for Proper 5B (see under "Intersection & Proclamation")..
